The Residential Property Managers Association of New Zealand today welcomed new tenancy rules that start now. The rules make it easier for people with pets to rent homes while also protecting landlords.

This is a big change for how pets are handled in rental housing across the country.

The main goal of the new rules is to help responsible tenants who have pets find a place to live. This has been a major problem in the rental market for a long time.

“For many years, the shortage of pet friendly rentals has caused stress and limited choices for families,” said the CEO of the Association. “These new rules update our laws for today. They recognize that pets are important family members.”

The property association said these changes work because there are also new measures to protect landlords.

Landlords now have clearer ways to get paid for any damage that approved pets might cause. This helps manage the financial risk for property owners.

The Association says all property management companies are now using new forms and procedures for rental applications and agreements to follow the law.

The group expects more demand for services like deep cleaning, carpet replacement, and maintenance. This is because properties will switch more often between tenants with pets and those without.

Property managers are encouraged to use clear pet rules in rental agreements. These rules should explain what is expected for pet size, behavior, and owner duties.

“These new pet rules provide the clarity everyone needed. It is no longer a situation where pets are completely forbidden,” the CEO said. “Our industry is ready to help both tenants and landlords use these new rules fairly. This will make renting better for everyone.”
