Whitireia and WelTec, operating under Te Pūkenga, have announced a strategic partnership with the multi-billion dollar RiverLink project to address critical workforce needs while creating lasting career pathways for the Wellington region. This collaboration will ensure the landmark infrastructure project is supported by locally trained talent.

The educational partnership addresses RiverLink’s demand for skilled workers through two key programs. A new Level 2 experiential learning program provides hands-on construction experience for school leavers and career changers, serving as a gateway to the industry. Simultaneously, the Bachelor of Engineering Technology program, specializing in civil engineering, will prepare students for technical roles through work-integrated learning opportunities directly with RiverLink construction partners.

The RiverLink project, a joint initiative between Hutt City Council, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, and Greater Wellington Regional Council, encompasses flood protection, transportation improvements, and urban development. The collaboration with Whitireia and WelTec ensures the project will draw from a pipeline of local graduates equipped with specific skills required for its successful completion.

Students will benefit from real-world experience on an active construction site, learning from industry professionals while working toward qualifications that lead directly to employment. The initiative strengthens the regional economy by developing skills that will remain in the community long after the project’s completion.
